Low
Carbohydrate Diets

Low
carbohydrate diets are diets with very low carbohydrate intakes. This
reduces insulin production and your body uses protein and fats to fuel body
activities. This forced method of using fats as fuel energy leads to production
of ketone bodies, as fat cannot fuel energy requirements of red blood cells and
brain. This ketosis state causes fatigue and nausea. There are different low
carbohydrate diets with little variations like High Protein diet, Scarsdale
Diet, Stillman Diet, Hollywood Diet,
Zone Diet, Ketogenic Diet, and most
famous Atkins Diet
of Dr. Robert Atkins.
Low
carbohydrate diets often allow you to gorge on butter, meat, and cheese while
cutting off rice, pasta, bread, and alcohol. While there is conflicting
information on the long term health impacts that a low carbohydrate diets like
Atkins may do (low carb but ultra high cholesterol from the consumption of mass
amount of meat and animal products), some other low carbohydrate program like
South Beach Diet
allow for carbs but in moderation and primarily through the introduction of
simple carbs as opposed to complex carbohydrates.
Ultimately you
will have to decide what is best for you. A sensible approach to carbs
makes perfect sense and can certainly contribute to weight loss and an
improvement in whole health. Low carbohydrate diets can and should be
something you learn more about as we learn more about food interactions and
proper combinations and how simple adjustments in our diet can adapt our
metabolism, insulin, and digestion and how it relates to weight loss.
